Kenneth Cole was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 23, 1954. He is one of the country's most successful fashion designers; he founded Kenneth Cole Productions in 1982. Cole's father Charile was the owner of Brooklyn shoe manufacturer El Greco; they are known for the creation of Candie's women's footwear. Cole did not want to become a fashion designer at first- he initially enrolled in Emory University's law program. He wanted to display his wares at a trade show at Manhattan's Hilton Hotel, but could not afford to rent a hotel room or a meeting room, so he sold his shoes out of a trailer, selling over forty thousand pairs in just three days. In 1985, he became a fashion industry pioneer yet again when he decided to adopt AIDS research and awareness as a cause. Cole was known for his ad campaigns from this time period, which featured children of different ethnicities paired with supermodels. During the mid to late 80s, Kenneth Cole enjoyed a lot of success, and continued to create ad campaigns with messages such as practicing safe sex and donating to causes that help the homeless. Today, Kenneth Cole Productions owns eighty stores around the world, and 4,500 more stores carry his designs. Cole also sells his wares online and via catalog.
